About Me

I am an Associate Professor of History at Wake Forest University. My research and teaching focus on the history of law, empire, and US foreign relations.

I am the author of Legalist Empire (Oxford University Press) and articles in  Diplomatic History, the Journal of American History, and Modern American History. A list of publications can be found in my CV. Short descriptions of recent publications can be found here.

My current research explores the intellectual, diplomatic, legal, and economic history of US sanctions during the 20th century.

I also serve as a co-editor of the US and the World book series with Cornell University Press.

Originally from Oakland, CA, I moved to the East coast in 2002 and lived in Washington, DC, New York, and Boston. I currently live in Winston Salem, NC with my wife, two daughters, and a small, lazy dog.
